The first step necessary to get your WinCVS working with a remote CVS repository is to set up a connection.
Start by selecting Admin -> Preferences from the menu. In the dialog, select the preferred method. If you are connecting to a cvsnt based server, you probably want ntserver. If you are connecting to a linux/unix based cvs server, go for pserver.
The path is the location on the server where your repository resides. Your administrator (or yourself!) should know this. Avoid problems by substituting : in Windows based repositories with double slashes (//). Enter in the ip address or dns name of your CVS server in the host address field, and supply your username in the username field.
If you want to change repository defaults, use the Globals tab. If you are on a slow link, check that TCP/IP compression is turned on (higher number is higher compression). Select OK when you are done.
Select Admin->Login to connect to the database and type in your password.
